Chargers and cables: why Zohra won't just sell you anything
If there's one topic our specialists feel strongly about, it's chargers. In our repair shops, we regularly see devices with damage directly attributable to a poor charger or a cheap cable. Burnt charging ports, worn-out batteries that need replacing after just a year, and in rare cases, even devices that won't turn on at all. That's why our collection of chargers and cables is so carefully curated.
What actually happens with a bad charger
A charger does more than just supply power. It communicates with your device, determines the correct voltage, and adjusts to the charging speed your battery can handle at that moment. A good charger does this smoothly and stably. A bad charger delivers irregular current, doesn't cut back in time when your battery is almost full, or causes voltage spikes that slowly but surely damage your device.
You won't see the effect immediately. Your phone is charging, so it seems fine. But after six months, a year, sometimes longer, you'll come to us with a battery that no longer lasts a full day, a charging port that no longer makes stable contact, or a device that gets hot while charging. When we perform such a repair, we can often immediately see that the damage was not caused by normal use.
MFi certification is not a marketing label
For iPhone and iPad users, the Lightning cable has now been replaced by USB-C, but for many devices, Lightning will remain relevant for years to come. And for all those devices, the rule is: only buy MFi-certified cables. MFi stands for Made for iPhone/iPad and means that Apple has checked the cable for safety and performance. Uncertified Lightning cables sometimes work perfectly, but can also give a message that the cable is not supported, or damage your charging port over time.
We do not sell Lightning cables without MFi certification. Not because Apple requires it, but because we have seen too often in our stores what a difference it makes. If something is called Made for iPhone, we want to be sure that it is indeed suitable for iPhone.
USB-C: not every cable is the same
With the switch to USB-C on almost all modern devices, you might think that every cable is the same. That's not the case. USB-C cables differ enormously in what they can handle. A cheap cable might deliver 5 watts, just enough to charge a phone slowly. A quality cable supports Power Delivery for fast charging as intended by the manufacturer.
Our ThePhoneLab USB-C to USB-C cables deliver a stable 60 watts, enough for fast charging of iPhones, iPads, and most other modern devices. They are available in 1 and 2 meters. We clearly state in the product description what each cable can handle, without hidden limitations and without unpleasant surprises.
A cable for every old connection too
Not everyone has the latest phone or laptop. And those who carefully use an older device also deserve a cable that does what it's supposed to do. That's why we have consciously kept the classic connections in our assortment. USB-A to Lightning for iPhones and iPads that still need a USB-C adapter. USB-A to USB-C for those who combine older chargers with more modern devices. And USB-A to Micro-USB for everything that has been around for a while but still works fine.
We don't just hope these cables work either. The same core, the same shielding, the same connector quality as our newest cables. Because an older phone deserves stable power just as much.
Also for MacBook and Apple Watch
In addition to phone cables, our shop also offers specific charging cables for Apple devices where it's harder to find good replacements. A USB-C to MacBook MagSafe 2 cable for MacBooks from 2012 to 2017. A USB-C to MacBook MagSafe 3 cable for models from 2021. And a USB-C to Apple Watch charging cable for those who have lost their Watch cable or want a spare.
Not the accessories you find everywhere, but the cables that often turn out to be necessary. Reason enough to keep them in our assortment.
Charging blocks with the correct protocols
A charging block is the component that converts the electricity from your outlet into something your device can use. Its quality directly determines how safely and quickly you charge. We select charging blocks based on a few key points. They must support the correct protocols for fast charging, such as Power Delivery for iPhone, iPad, and most Android devices, and Quick Charge where applicable. They must be equipped with the right protections against overheating, short circuits, and overload. And they must comply with European safety standards, meaning CE-marked and with a correct plug for the Benelux.
In our shop, you'll find 20-watt charging blocks for basic use, 60-watt for those who want to charge quickly and also charge an iPad or laptop, and 100 or 140-watt models for those who want to power a MacBook with the same adapter. Additionally, we offer a 3-in-1 adapter for those who want to charge an iPhone, iPad, and a third device with one plug. Each selected because they do what they promise.
Wireless charging: easier, but not inherently good
Wireless charging via Qi and MagSafe is incredibly convenient. No more cables, just place your phone down and it charges. However, wireless charging is less efficient than wired, and a poor wireless charger can produce more heat than is good for your battery. That's why we only choose wireless chargers that are correctly tuned to the standard they are designed for. A MagSafe-compatible charger for iPhone must have correct magnetic alignment and charge at the right power. A Qi charger must have the charging coil in exactly the right place, otherwise energy is wasted and your device heats up unnecessarily.
Our wireless chargers have been tested for alignment, heat generation, and actual charging speed. What you read on the packaging is also true in practice.
Fairly priced, no more expensive than necessary
Finally: good chargers don't have to be expensive. There's a huge gap between the dirt-cheap sticky plug from a gas station and the premium adapter from a device manufacturer. Our collection sits in the middle: quality that we ourselves dare to recommend, at prices we consider fair. No brand surcharge for a logo, no compromising on safety to achieve a lower price point.
Because your charger and cable are not accessories you should try to save money on. They are the components that go directly into your device every day.
